Unbuild Together: Archaism vs. Modernity

The catalog that accompanies the exhibition "Unbuild together" of the Uzbekistan National Pavilion  at Venice Biennale, has been imagined as a sensory, literary and physical journey. The first part is made up of a succession of images which introduce the reader, through visual associations, to the themes and concepts addressed in this biennale: the idea of ruin, the labyrinth, the earth, history and landscapes of Uzbekistan.

The second part explores these themes in greater depth. With the help of contributions from archaeologists and historians, architects and urban planners, we question this supposed duality between archaism and modernity. We discover the incredible works of S.P Tolstov and his expedition to Khworezm and of Igor Savitsky, who followed him for many years. We retrace the extraordinary epic of the brick, in Central Asia and in Bukhara. We dive into the myth of the labyrinth. Studio ko finally delivers an intimate confession of its approach to architecture, its link with context and history, and the path it intends to trace.

Finally, the third part is designed as a personal diary, giving carte blanche to the photographer Emine Gözde Sevim, who followed the students and artists for 2 weeks, invited to participate in the workshops organized by studio ko in Uzbekistan. Through her gaze, we see the citadels of Karakalpakstan, the monuments of Bukhara, the capital Tashkent. But above all, we are open to the passion, wonder, doubts and discoveries of these students.
